KARL LARSEN-TOWER RECORDS
Tower records had closed down on December 22, 2006!
I was there for the closing, people hugging each other, crying as they closed the door for the last time. The sun had set on Sunset and the crowd caused a little mess in the sense that it wasn’t very photogenic. Just a crowd of people hugging. Nothing artistic about it. It was Christmas week. And then it went into January of 2007. During the month of January, they started taking down all the signs on the side of the building. No signage no advertisements at all except for the Towers Records sign. Which was very dramatic on its own. It was that week in January that I thought oh let me take a nice picture of this place as the sun was setting. And I realized all the sun is setting, leaving the store in the shade because the sun sets on the opposite side of the building. But I thought you know if I got here early in the morning as the sun came up on Sunset I could get a great shot and I better do that before they turn this building into a Petco. So that night I went to bed early. I woke up at 5 am February 3, 2007 It was still dark. I drove here. I waited by Book Soup to get a good composition and as the sun came up, I realized it shined right on the broadside of the building because the sun actually comes up on Holloway ave not on Sunset. And that’s how I get that beautiful shot.
